Mongolia appoints Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai, a Harvard graduate, as its 32nd Prime Minister

On 27 January 2021, the parliament of Mongolia appointed Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai as the 32nd Prime Minister of Mongolia, following the resignation of Ukhnaa Khurelsukh from office a week earlier, due to the public protest against the government’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak in Mongolia.

Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai graduated from Harvard Kennedy School with a MPA in 2015. Upon graduation from HKS in 2015, Mr Luvsannamsrai returned to his home country and was elected as Member of Parliament in 2016 and 2020. Before being appointed as Prime Minister of Mongolia, he served as Cabinet Secretary at the Government of Mongolia for two consecutive terms.
At the age of 41, he is considered one of youngest sitting prime ministers in the world. He spearheaded the creation of Mongolia’s long-term development agenda – Alsiin Haraa 2050 (“Vision 2050”) involving more than 1,500 researchers and policymakers to form a national sustainable development model. The agenda was approved by the Parliament in 2020.
L.Oyun-Erdene appointed as 32nd Prime Minister of Mongolia
At its plenary meeting of 27 January 2021, the State Great Hural appointed Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene as the 32nd Prime Minister of Mongolia, with 87.9 percent support.
Outgoing Prime Minister U. Khurelsukh handed over the seal of the Government of Mongolia to the 32nd Prime Minister and wished success in his future endeavors. U. Khurelsukh underscored that he had no doubt that, at this critical juncture, the new Prime Minister would spare no effort in righteously leading the country and upholding the national unity. The new Prime-Minister L.Oyun-Erdene noted that “My Government will continue policies of the Government led by you, Mr.U.Khurelsukh, and complete the major development projects, including the oil refinery plant. I will work for the development of Mongolia cognizant of my duties and responsibilities”.
